Week 4 May 25 - May 29: HS English, MS History, HS Econ, MS Creative Expressions
The Middle School Drama Class has been writing their own fantasy play since January. Each student created their own character, and we wrote the play together, figuring out the best place for each character, how they interacted, who they did and didn't get along with, and what everyone's mission was. Instead of abandoning our play completely, we decided that each student would write a monologue as their character. And by listening to each one, you'll get more and more of the story.
Ms. Judy’s English 9 and 10 classes created One-Pagers! A One-Pager is a creative response to a learning experience. The students were asked to create (by hand or digitally) an imaginative one-page visual response to a favorite text (novel, short story, song, etc) by making connections between words and images.
Ms. Z’s 10th graders English class students completed slideshow presentations analyzing characters from the graphic novel American Born Chinese.
The 11th and 12th graders worked very hard on their American and British Author Presentations in English class. They chose their author and created these amazing slideshows.
In Honors English, students selected and researched a variety of topics about the stage play "The Importance of Being Earnest". Some of the topics include History of costumes, set, makeup, history of performances of Earnest, dramaturgy, concept art, and lighting. The students worked very hard on this project.
Our MS History classes were given the opportunity to choose and explore a famous landmark. They researched and created slideshows that represented what they learned about these iconic places around our country and world.
In Economics, our seniors went through the process of creating a business plan for a new product and then presented to staff members who were “sharks”. Many deals were made and both students and staff enjoyed participating in Shark Tank virtually. They all worked very hard on their Shark Tank presentations.
In Creative Expressions, these middle schoolers learned about poetry and created I am and Shape Poems.
This year there were two drama classes at Winston, a beginning and an advance, and we are very proud of what the students have accomplished. They stepped up and worked on a Shakespearean monologue each, recorded themselves performing it, and submitted it online, showing that even throughout this period of distance learning they are still capable of and dedicated to growing their performance talents. We hope you enjoy This slideshow of our students’ monologues!

Week 3 May 18- May 22: HS Science + 8th grade, MS English, MS/HS Digital Media, MS Art
Mr. Weber’s Science students researched different science careers and created slideshow presentations about the career they chose, a description of the career including the education required and salary, and how the career relates to science. Students enjoyed this project by adding pictures and illustrations to their slides.
Biology: Each student was assigned 2 cellular organelles, and asked to design a page for each one as part of a catalog selling parts to make cells. They needed to include information about the structures and functions of their assigned organelles, as well as a short sales pitch to convince budding mad scientists to include their organelles in their upcoming monstrosities. Each of the 3 Biology classes produced their own separate catalog.
For their Spring Showcase project, this year’s Physics class chose to build popsicle stick bridges. All bridges had the same specifications as to size and materials that were available, but each student group was free to come up with their own designs. Two of the three groups had completed enough on their bridges when distance learning was initiated that their bridges could be tested. Testing was done by placing the bridges so they spanned gaps of equal distances, then weights were added until one bridge collapsed.
Digital Media: Using Adobe Photoshop, High School students contributed many projects done over the school year. Some project highlights were creating double exposure effects with animals and the environments they would inhabit and create a duotone effect for portrait photos. Students also learned how to manipulate subjects and backgrounds together and adding a neon effect to the composition. Students also created minimalist movie posters to highlight their favorite films and propaganda posters for their favorite fictional characters. In Middle School students have been learning how to illustrate digitally using Adobe Illustrator. Some students used the pen tool to create original works, while others took found images and recolored them to fit colour schemes of their choosing.
Middle School English: For 8th Grade, we were inspired by The Musketeers and decided to create our own crests. Students could either do one of their family, or one based off the book. They made their own coat of arms that represented the things they saw as important. For 6th and 7th grade, we were inspired by our survival book The Raft, to put ourselves in the shoes of the main character and pick three items we would want to have if we were stranded on a deserted island!
Middle School Art has created a lot of amazing pieces this year! Take a look at all of the work they have chosen to share for the showcase.

Week 2 May 11 - May 15: HS History, MS Math, Spanish, HS Music, Geography
Our Geography students created travel brochures for different places in South America! Explore the options each place has to offer! Don’t we all wish we could travel there now!
High school History students have spent the marking period conducting independent research in relation to either World War I or World War II. World History focused on the study and analysis of war poems to gain insight into the more human elements of the conflict. U.S. History continued to hone their research abilities and designed their own topics to explore the aspects of World War II that were of greatest interest to them. These abstracts summarize their research and findings.
Middle School Math designed their own rooms! Using a slideshow, they show the dimensions, color of paint, furniture, lighting, decorations, and practice budgeting with an itemized cost sheet. Students got to be creative in the type of room they wanted to design. Enjoy looking at all of these fun rooms!
Spanish 1 - Students were asked to draw a blueprint of their room and label items using the vocabulary from Capitulo 6A. They were allowed to draw the picture freehand, use apps that allow drawing or other creative ways to show the picture they created.
Spanish 2 - Students wrote a story about an accident that occurred in real life or make-believe. They were required to use vocabulary from Capitulo 5B. They used verbs in the PRETERITE AND IMPERFECT tense as well as the reflexive spelling indicating something that has been done to them or someone else.
Aidan Shepard is on his way to becoming an accomplished musician, already being able to play multiple instruments. This year he has studied a wide array of musical genres and has chosen to perform two songs of his favorite style on his preferred instrument, the acoustic guitar: Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Space Oddity by David Bowie.
